Finding the Right Path for Simic Solutions
The services were easy to list. The harder—and more important—question was why Simic Solutions should exist at all.
When I first started thinking seriously about Simic Solutions, the obvious direction was pretty straightforward.
Websites. Marketing. Branding. Social media. Technology. Maybe automation and custom software.
Basically, all the things a modern small business needs and usually doesn’t have enough time to deal with.
There was only one problem.
There are already thousands of companies doing exactly that.
I could build websites. I could help businesses with their social media. I could improve their online presence. Those are all useful services, and they’re still things Simic Solutions can offer.
But none of them answered the bigger question:
Why should Simic Solutions exist?
Being another digital agency wasn’t enough for me.
I started looking at the competition
I wanted to understand what other companies around Durham Region were offering, along with what I’d be competing against online.
The answer wasn’t particularly surprising.
Web designers. Marketing agencies. SEO companies. Social media managers. Software consultants. Freelancers. Fiverr. Wix. Squarespace. AI website builders.
There is no shortage of people willing to build a business a website.
And that made something clear.
Simic Solutions couldn’t differentiate itself by simply doing the same things slightly differently.
The difference had to come from why we were doing them in the first place.
And strangely enough, the answer wasn’t hiding in the competition.
It was hiding in my own problems.
I’ve been the business owner
Before Simic Solutions, I ran the Courtice Canteen for about five years.
Running a small business teaches you something that doesn’t always show up in business books.
There is the business.
And then there is the person trying to run it.
Those are not separate things.
A business can have a perfectly reasonable list of things that need to happen:
Update the website. Post on Instagram. Follow up with customers. Track expenses. Do payroll. Schedule employees. Order supplies. Fix whatever broke this week. Plan for next month. Work on the business instead of just working in it.
None of that sounds impossible individually.
The problem is that life happens at the same time.
Employees call in.
Kids get sick.
Something breaks.
Customers need you.
You’re tired.
Something more urgent appears.
And suddenly the thing you absolutely intended to do Tuesday has been pushed to Friday, then next week, then into the mysterious abyss where small-business administrative tasks go to die.
I’ve lived that.
More recently, while building my own projects, I started noticing how often I was solving the same problem for myself.
Not:
“What should I be doing?”
Usually, I already knew.
The harder question was:
“How do I organize everything I’m responsible for in a way that I can actually keep moving?”
That distinction changed how I started thinking about Simic Solutions.
Owners don’t necessarily need more things to do
There’s an endless amount of business advice telling owners what they should be doing.
Post more.
Market more.
Automate.
Use AI.
Improve your SEO.
Start a newsletter.
Make videos.
Track more metrics.
Optimize everything.
Wonderful.
We’ll just squeeze all of that somewhere between payroll and picking the kids up.
The more I thought about it, the more I kept coming back to one idea:
People usually don’t need more things to do. They need a better way to navigate the things they’re already responsible for.
Maybe the answer isn’t another task.
Maybe it’s a system.
Maybe it’s automation.
Maybe it’s a better website.
Maybe it’s an operating procedure so employees stop needing to ask the owner the same question.
Maybe it’s organizing everything in one place instead of carrying the entire company around in your head.
Sometimes it’s technology.
Sometimes it’s marketing.
Sometimes it’s an embarrassingly simple change that makes you wonder why you’ve been doing something the hard way for three years.
Give the owner the tool or setup that makes their workflow, well, flow.
And suddenly I knew what I wanted Simic Solutions to actually do.
Make businesses easier to run
That’s it.
Not “provide innovative digital transformation solutions.”
Not “leverage cutting-edge technologies to unlock synergistic growth opportunities,” because apparently corporate websites are legally required to contain sentences no normal person has ever spoken.
Just:
Make businesses easier to run.
Websites can be part of that.
Marketing can be part of that.
Automation, software, AI, organization, systems and consulting can all be part of that.
But they’re tools.
The solution depends on the problem.
A business owner might come to Simic Solutions believing they need a new website.
Maybe they do.
Or maybe, after talking through the business, we discover the website isn’t actually the biggest problem.
That’s where I want Simic Solutions to be different.
We help with the problems you can see.
And sometimes, even the ones you can’t.
Owner to owner
Eventually all of this condensed into one sentence that immediately felt right:
Simic Solutions: An owner-to-owner company.
Not business-to-business.
Owner-to-owner.
Because I’m not interested in pretending there’s some invisible wall between “the business” and the human being running it.
I’ve owned a business.
I’ve had employees.
I’ve dealt with customers.
I’ve marketed something when I had absolutely no desire to make another social media post.
I’ve had too many things to do and not enough hours to do them.
I’ve watched things I genuinely cared about get pushed aside—not because I was lazy or didn’t want them badly enough, but because something else needed my attention first.
That’s the person I want Simic Solutions to help.
Not just their company.
Them.
If we can save an owner five hours every week, that’s valuable.
If we can get part of their business out of their head and into a system, that’s valuable.
If we can make marketing happen consistently without them constantly thinking about it, that’s valuable.
If we can identify a problem they didn’t even realize was costing them time or money, that’s valuable.
And if all they actually need is a better website, we’ll build them a damn good website.
So this is Simic Solutions
I’m sure the company will continue evolving. In fact, I hope it does.
But for the first time, I don’t feel like I’m trying to decide what list of services belongs underneath the Simic Solutions logo.
I know what belongs there.
Anything that genuinely helps us fulfill this:
SIMIC SOLUTIONS
An owner-to-owner company.
What we do: Make businesses easier to run.
How: Systems, technology, marketing, automation and practical solutions built around the owner.
Why: Because the business isn’t separate from the person running it.
That’s the path.
Now we build it.
